Senende Boys shift focus to rugby 7s after Term One heartache

Peter Simwa at Chambiti primary school as Senende featured in the rugby 15s, Vihiga County level
Simwa has downplayed claims that Senende were over ambitious to qualify this year given that they had made it to the regionals for the first time, maintaining that his side, despite being newbies, gave their competitors a run for their money.
The Senende tactician says he is shifting focus to Rugby 7s next term so that this time round they will not exit the competitions in the group stage as it has been for them the past three years.
“We were in a tough pool yet we lost one game only against Bungoma 5-0. Sharks humbled Kakamega champions Musingu Boys 3-0 before humiliating Kolanya Boys 14-0. Musingu only got on top of us because they scored more tries than us against Kolanya even though we had tied on points,” stated Simwa.
Even though Senende returned home empty handed in terms of trophies, Simwa says he has picked enough lessons from this year’s competitions which Busia County played host to moving forward.
“Truth be told, our opponents were a better side in as much as my boys put in a spirited fight. As Senende we need to train more than we did,” the Senende tactician said, revealing that the diet in the Senende camp could not sustain the sharks in the competitions of such magnitude,” he added.
“While we survived on a cup of tea, one egg and three slices of bread the whole day, our opponents had a special diet and issue we must address moving forward.
“This could only sustain us during the first game of the day but the second game my team lacked energy,” he stated citing little time teams had to rest before advancing to regional championships yet his three key players had sustained serious injuries at the county stage.
