Nondies Chairman Richard Muturi has expressed his delight following the successful staging of the inaugural Ruff N Tuff 7s tournament, seeing it as a key step in promoting rugby and showcasing grassroots talent.
While speaking to Citizen Digital after the conclusion of the one-day event, Muturi said everything went according to plan, with a strong turnout and vibrant atmosphere setting the tone for what could become a staple on the rugby calendar.
“As for the inaugural Ruff N Tuff, we are glad that everything worked out as planned. The crowd that turned up was great and we had great moments throughout the day. From a sponsorship and hosting point of view, I am confident the tournament served its purpose,” noted Muturi.
The tournament, which was held at the Ngong Racecourse on Saturday, was designed with a clear goal of spotlighting the talent within community rugby clubs.
Muturi was quick to point out that this objective was clearly achieved.
“It was evident that community clubs have the capacity and talent to put on a great show. The level of competition and energy on display proved that,” he said.
Muturi also took the opportunity to thank the key sponsors who helped make the tournament a success.
Looking ahead, the CEO revealed that future editions of the Ruff N Tuff tournament will be even bigger, with plans already in place to expand the event.
“One of our takeaways is that we need to inform people earlier to avoid the last-minute rush we witnessed this time. We’re also keen on introducing more teams and making it a two-day event, which will include a ladies' category,” he announced.
Strathmore Leos were crowned the champions after defeating Mwamba RFC in the final.
