Police Bullets advance to CAF CL qualifiers semis despite CBE loss

Police Bullets advanced to the semi-finals of the CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA region qualifiers despite going down 2-1 in the hands of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) in the final group stage match played Thursday afternoon at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.

The reigning Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL) champions scraped into the last four after placing second in Pool ‘B’ with four points while CBE qualified as the group leaders on six points.

CBE had already booked a spot in the semi-final having won their first two matches against Yei Joint Stars of South Sudan and Rwanda’s Rayon Sports.

The Beldine Odemba-coached side, who kicked off the competition by a goalless draw against Yei Joint Stars before seeing off Rayon Sports Rwanda 1-0 Wednesday had a superior goal difference over Yei who wrapped up their group stage campaign with a 2-1 win over Rayon Sport but bowed out.

Bullets will seek the final spot against Tanzanian heavyweights Simba Queens in the semis on Monday The winner of the tournament will represent the region in the CAF Champions League.

Red-hot Senaf Wakuma gave the home side the lead after two minutes and their backline remained impenetrable for Police FC who restored parity in the 32nd minute through Rebecca Akinyi.

Wakuma grabbed her brace in the 58th minute and the hosts held on to win 2-1.

The winner of the tournament will represent the region in the CAF Champions League.
