Omanyala wins ASA Grand Prix to continue hot streak
Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala
clocked 10.12 seconds as he stormed to victory in the first leg of the ASA
Grand Prix held Wednesday night in Tuks Stadium, South Africa.
Omanyala found the winning edge with a late burst as former world
junior champion Benjamin Richardson finished second in 10.33 while Rivaldo
Roberts settled for third in 10.34. Kenya’s Samuel Imeta came home fourth in
10.39
Despite missing on a sub-10 mark, Omanyala was
contented with his performance at the world continental tour challenger event.
“We expected fast times but a win is always a win and
in everything we celebrate and thank God. We really wanted to do sub-10 but you
know every race counts so onto the next. I was also a bit cold today,” he said.
The African champion will remain in South Africa ahead
of the second leg of the event to be staged next week in Germiston.
“We hope the next will be faster and the target is
still the same to run under 10 seconds.” Omanyala said.
Another Kenyan Wiseman Were took top honours in the
men’s 400m hurdles after clocking 49.23
