Nzoia Sugar Football Club will remain in the National Super League (NSL) next season after clinching a vital 1-0 win over Mombasa United at Sudi Stadium on Saturday, a result that lifted the pressure off the team with just one match left in the season.
The narrow victory not only ensured Sugar Millers' survival
in the competitive second-tier league but also brought relief and renewed
optimism to the team’s technical bench and fans.
Interim coach Peter Ginn credited the players’ resilience
and fighting spirit for the positive result, noting that the team can now
approach their final fixture against Migori Youth with less anxiety.
“The pressure is off. That win was massive for us, and the
boys deserve credit. Now we can face our final game with more composure and
focus on finishing the season on a high,” Ginn told Citizen Digital.
Adding to the good news for the Bungoma-based side, Ginn
also expressed delight over the club’s recent sponsorship deal with Nzoia Sugar
2025 – a rebranded version of the previously known Nzoia Sugar Company. The
financial and logistical support from the sugar firm is expected to stabilize
club operations and improve preparations for the upcoming season.
“We are very happy to receive this support from Nzoia Sugar
2025. It shows faith in the club and gives us a solid foundation to build on as
we look ahead. I would also like to thank our Chairman Evans Kadenge for his
relentless support towards the team during the dark days, he used his own
resources at some point to ensure we sail through. I also thank the players for
being patient, now that things look promising, we can't wait for next season,”he
added.
On his part, club Chairman Evans Kadenge welcomed the move,
terming it a timely boost and promising to guide the team back to premier
league football.
"We welcome the sponsorship because it will boost the
morale of players, our goal is to tap into raw talent and get back to premier
league and even continental football. When I was the coach of this team we won
a premier league title, that's where we want to be," Kadenge said.
With 39 points and a 12th-place standing on the NSL table,
Nzoia are now six points clear of the relegation zone, making it mathematically
impossible for them to be relegated. The club's survival comes as a relief
after a tough campaign marked by inconsistency and off-field challenges.
As they prepare to take on Migori Youth in their season
finale, Nzoia will be looking to close the chapter with another positive
result—this time, without the weight of relegation fears looming over them.
