NSL: Nairobi United edge Msa Stars, 3K whip Kisumu

Visitors Nairobi United started the National Super League (NSL) 2024-2025 season with a 2-1 win over Mombasa Stars at Serani Grounds, Mombasa County on Sunday.

 

Duncan Odhiambo displayed man-of-the-match show, scoring a brace while Abdulrahman Abdallah scored the consolation for Mombasa Stars.

 

Nairobi United took the lead just two minutes after the start, when Odhiambo powered a strong 19-yard shot past Stars' goalkeeper Said Dhadho.

 

Mombasa Stars took the first quarter of the game to settle before launching a series attacks at Nairobi United's goal.

 

Abdallah Equalised for Stars in the 16th minute after receiving a split pass from playmaker Said Abdulrahman,  then powered a low shot past Kevin Oduor.

 

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Odhiambo completed his brace with a tap-in from a  close range, after receiving a well calculated cross from Charo Majaliwa.

 

The home side fought hard for an equaliser through substitutes Chiringu Masudi, Rashid Idd and Dennis Katan but Nairobi United held on to their 2-1 lead till the final whistle.

 

Mombasa Stars head coach Hussein Mohammed was unbowed despite the home loss.

 

"We prepared to win this game, it's a game of chances, Nairobi United only had 2 chances and they utilised but we had many which we couldn't".

 

On his side Nairobi United Head Coach Edwin Mwaura was elated with the win, saying it was important to win the first game of the season.

 

" I thank God for the results, my boys worked critically hard but Stars played well and put us on our toes from the first minute to the end of the match".

 

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County, MCF lost by solitary goal to visitors Vihiga United, while in Kisumu County, debutants 3K FC clobbered Kisumu All Stars 4-0.

 

New signing Oscar Juma scored a hat-trick while Brian Misango scored the other goal, to hand the Embu-based 3K a dream debut in the league.
