NOCK-Kenya holds national teams coaches symposium

The National Olympic Committee NOC-K, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi conducting a Coaches' symposium involving national team coaches of different sports in a bid to upgrade coaching standards across all sports disciplines.

Kenya Weightlifting Federation secretary John Ogolla, who also doubles up as the NOCK-K's, says the forum is intended to facilitate mentorship through exchanging knowledge among seasoned coaches and emerging talents to create an enriching environment for learning and growth.

"As a country, we have realized that we do not have a coaching structure. Most of our coaches have yet to go through the formal education system, and yet they are coaching.

"So we have decided to develop a coaching program where everybody can go through a system that we can satisfy, grade, and accredit.

"Meaning that we want to have a system where everybody goes through a similar ladder before diverting into their specific sport disciplines," said Ogolla.

Over 20 sports disciplines are represented in the inspiring event to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and discuss strategies to enhance coaching effectiveness.

Among the coaches attending the event is seasoned Strathmore University handball team tactician Peter Mwathi whose side clinched the league title unbeaten in the 2019/2020 season.

"This is what we have been lacking, getting the coaches to understand the sports science part sports, which most coaches need help understanding.

"But with this kind of training, most of them will be better equipped because it is the only way. We are talking about data in sports and how to collect and use it, then you will always understand what you are supposed to be doing," observed Mwathi.

NOC-K believes the initiative will bolster the expertise and capabilities of Kenya national coaches as they prepare for the exciting endeavors of the 2023-2024 calendar, targeting capacity-building initiatives aiming to empower the coaches with the necessary tools and knowledge to elevate their coaching prowess to lead Kenyan athletes to even more outstanding achievements.
