Hours before the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally revs off in Naivasha on Thursday, the government has banned parking and selling of alcohol along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Parties along Mo South Lake road in Naivasha have also been outlawed as the Rift Valley security team announced a raft of security measures ahead of the rally slated for the Easter weekend.

This came as the government identified four roads from Nairobi which motorists heading to Western Kenya would use so as to avoid the perennial traffic jam.

According to Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Abdi Hassan, security measures were in place to avoid traffic snarl-ups that have in the past seen motorists spend the night by the roadside.

He said that anyone found overlapping, parking by the roadside or selling alcohol would face the full wrath of the law as more security officers were dispatched to the town.

Addressing the press in Naivasha, Hassan called on those traveling for the rally and upcountry to observe traffic rules adding that they expected heavy traffic over the weekend.

Cars found parked by the roadside while those overlapping will have themselves to blame as their cars will be detained until Tuesday.

The Commissioner called on licensed bar owners to observe the law and set time adding that any club violating the law would be closed down.

On his part, KWS assistant director Joseph Dadacha said that robust measures had been put in place in Hell's Gate national park where the rally would be held.

He said that they had put in place measures to address the issues of pollution and littering in a bid to protect the habitat of the park that is home to tens of wild animals.

On his part, the chairman Nakuru County Tourism Association David Mwangi said that the town was expecting over 100,000 visitors during the rally and the Easter holidays.
