The national chess champions Victor Ng’ani and Mehul Gohil are battling in a four game series for the ultimate chess challenge at Bomas Hotel in Nairobi.

The event is being held as a precursor of the National Championship that will be held later this month.

The tournament will mark the climax of Kenyan chess activity for 2022 and is most anticipated event in their calendar.

“This is an important match. We are preparing for the national championship and in addition to that there has been a supremacy battle between Mehul Gohil and I. This match will sort of determine who will reign supreme,” Ng’ani said.

Multiple national chess champion Gohil who is also the reigning Mombasa Open tournament champion is very confident he will overcome his rival.

“I’m meeting one of the top talents Victor Ng’ani and my expectation is to wipe him out,” he said.

Organizers led by Brian Kidula said they expect a tough match between the two top chess players in the country.

“The purpose of this match is just to see them challenge for supremacy and there is ego involved. They want to see who the best between two is.”

Meanwhile KCB Chess team stunned Eastland Chess club 5-0 in their final match of the season to win their third consecutive Kenya Chess Premier League Title.

KCB got a total of 43 points ahead of Nairobi Chess Academy and Club who accumulated 29 points. Jomo Kenyatta University Chess club finished third with 27 points.

The league resumed officially this year after a break since 2019 due to covid-19 and attracted over 400 chess players from all over the country and is being conducted annually to help in growing the sport.
