Serani High School’s head coach, Alex Shikanga, is brimming
with confidence as his boys gear up to take on the country’s best in the 2025
National Secondary School Games, set to kick off on Tuesday, July 28, in
Kakamega.
Speaking to Citizen
Digital, Coach Shikanga acknowledged the tough challenge ahead but
expressed confidence that his squad is ready for the big stage.
“Our match against Highway will be both sweet and tough
since we play a similar style. But I’m confident we’ll give it our all and push
for a win,” he said.
Serani has been drawn into what many are calling the “Group
of Death” — Group B — alongside St. Joseph’s from the Rift Valley, Central
Kenya’s Kiirangari Secondary, and Nairobi’s formidable Highway High School.
“Many are calling it the group of death, but my boys are
well-prepared and hungry. This is our last dance as Serani’s senior squad — and
we intend to leave a lasting mark,” he added.
However, the seasoned tactician did not hide his
disappointment at the lack of support from local leaders in Mombasa County.
“This isn’t the first time we’re representing the Coast at
the Nationals, yet our leaders — from the Governor to MPs — have been missing
in action. These boys deserve better. Only Lulu Hassan showed up for them. It’s
time our leaders step up and support youth talent.”
Serani booked their ticket to the Nationals after a dramatic
5-3 penalty shootout victory over arch-rivals Tononoka Secondary in the Coast
regional finals.
All eyes are now on their opening clash Tuesday against
Kiirangari Secondary.
