The Nairobi athletics trials got underway today at the Nairobi West Prison Grounds.

The competitions are being held to determine the athletes who will represent Nairobi at the national level and eventually the country in the Tokyo World Championships.

In the 5,000m women's race, Tecla Cheserek of Langata claimed first place with a time of 16:18:04.

Closely behind her was Diana Chepkorir of Westlands who took second place and in third place was Josephine Nyakora who finished with a time of 18:23:80.

Cheserek stated that she was pleased with her body's performance and endurance and is looking to work on her speed a bit more.

"I am very pleased that my body's endurance is continuing to build but I feel I need to work on my speed a bit more if I am to compete at the highest level," stated a pleased Cheserek.

Elsewhere, in the 400m women's race under (U20), Diana Anyango sprinted to victory clocking a time 58:80, with Charity Imali and Mary Linet coming in behind her respectively.

In other events such as discus, Isaiah Wanjugu of Kasarani took first place followed by Charles Kipkemoi.

In the 100m men's seniors Moses Wasike of Westlands claimed pole position clocking an impressive 10.3 seconds.

The winners of all the events will take part in the national events later this month and probably represent the nation in the Tokyo World Championships.

"I have never had the chance to represent my country but I am hoping that this will be my chance to prove myself'," stated a hopeful Diana Chepkorir.
