Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) head coach Sammy Mulinge says inadequate preparation was the biggest contributor to poor results posted by the Kenyan teams at the just concluded African Clubs Volleyball Championships in Tunisia.

KPA, who returned to the country Tuesday morning, finished seventh in the 15-team men’s competition and Mulinge, who was targeting a podium finish to improve on their fifth-place finish last year, said the two-week period in camp was not enough.

“I’m happy the officials of KPA who accompanied the squad saw how we were not ticking all the boxes as the team only had two weeks in camp to prepare for the championship.

“Our opponents are spending three to four months preparing and by the time they are jetting out for the championship their squads are already in top form. We cannot challenge them and so I hope next time things will be better,” he lamented.

Mulinge also wants the Kenya Volleyball Federation to ensure all the league matches are played in the indoor facilities.

The seasoned coach also blamed their poor results to the loss of his opposite attacker Peter Kamara who contracted malaria upon the team’s arrival in Tunisia.

Moulodia Sportive de Boussalem of Tunisia defeated Zamalek of Egypt 3-2 (20-25,22-25,26-24,25-23,15-12) to win their first title on their debut in the men’s championship.

In the women’s championship, Kenya Pipeline’s dream to end their 18-year drought was thwarted Monday night after they lost 3-1 sets to Zamalek of Egypt in the final. Immediate champions KCB finished fifth.

The two teams jet back on Wednesday morning.
