Mathare end Gor’s perfect run, Stima stun Bandari
Mathare United defeated Gor Mahia FC 1-0 as they brought the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions’ perfect start to an end at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Sunday.
Substitute Daniel Otieno scored the winner with one minute left of regulation time with the result pushing Mathare into sixth on the KPL standings on 14 points, just behind KCB FC and Kakamega Homeboyz on goal difference.
Gor came into the clash just three days after they were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup following their 3-2 aggregate loss to DC Motema Pembe in the playoffs.
In Kisumu, Western Stima scored thrice in five minutes to complete a stunning 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Bandari in the only other KPL fixture of the day.
Hassan Abdallah had put the visitors 1-0 up at the half-hour mark before collapsing in the second half. Brian Otieno’s own goal, sandwiched between strikes from Samuel Odhiambo and Baron Oketch, condemned Bandari to their second defeat of the season.
