Rugby enthusiasts have every reason to smile as the Masaku Sevens is set to make a grand return after a seven-year break.

The event which was last held in 2016 is primed to take place from June 10-11 at the Machakos Golf Club in Machakos County.

Briefing reporters, Masaku Sevens Chairman Stanley Musyoka Mumo said that the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the electioneering period had played a part in the pausing of the tournament.

The event has over the years gained popularity attracting huge crowds and Mumo says they are expecting teams from the United Kingdom (UK), Uganda as well as local top teams such as Kenya Harlequins and Kabras to feature in this year's festival.

Mumo noted that the sports event plays a big part in uplifting the economy of the region as commercial transactions worth shillings are made during the festival.

"This year the event will go back to its roots where it all began in 2012 at the Machakos Golf Club grounds and we encourage partners to join us to take rugby back to its splendour - for the love of the game," he said.

Machakos County Sports Executive Onesmus Muasya said the county government will provide the necessary logistical support towards the success of the event including mapping out of entry routes to Machakos Town for efficient traffic management.
