The national women's rugby team players will be forced to wait longer for their owed allowances by the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) after the union admitted it is in a financial turmoil.

The players have not been paid their arrears for seven months and KRU chairman says their predicament is due to lack of sponsors.

“The position is, Lionesses do not have a current sponsor, we’ve not paid the players their allowances for the last six months and no money has come in.”

Former Lionesses player Sinaida Aura has been leading the online charge to champion for the ladies to be paid their dues saying life has been unbearable.

“These girls have not been paid for the last six or seven months. They show up to the training every day, and they still have responsibilities back home.

“Some are still in school, some are parents, some are breadwinners back home and that hits a nerve because I was once there luckily I at least had something else that I was doing but it’s actually very hard to balance when your mind is split between what you really love to do and what you have to do,” said Sinaida while appearing on NTV’s Sports On show.

Mutai says internal wrangles being witnessed at KRU have worsened things as the union is unable to attract potential sponsors with the current environment.

“I’m very confident that once we’ve sorted this in the next few days, sponsors will put in the money. First of all, what people are not talking about is we inherited an eight month arrear from the previous board, we cleared referees’ arrears and we are up to date with the referees. Rome was not built in one day but you can see progressively we are changing things and running things the right way.

“We don’t have a sponsor yet but we have some partners who are waiting to come in and once we resolve this impulse that we have it shall be a smooth sailing after that.”

Lionesses are currently preparing for the final Challenger Leg slated for May 18-19 in Krakow, Poland.

They are paired alongside Mexico, Belgium and home team Poland and currently lie fifth on the log on 24 points.
