Lionesses step up preps for second Challenger leg in SA

Kenya Lionesses Assistant Coach Simon Odongo says they are fine-tuning the team ahead of the second leg of the Challenger Series in South Africa this weekend, hoping to build on last weekend's win.

The Lionesses claimed their first international tournament win after seeing off Argentina 17-12 in the final to claim the first leg of the Cape Town 7s and Odongo says despite being champions, they are staying humble.

"Basically what we are focusing on is just tidying up everything that we did last week; just polishing on everything that we thoughts that we didn't do well.

"Despite being champions, there are lots of areas that we still didn't tick, so hopefully we get that fixed so that we can replicate everything we did last week and even do better this week."

Influential Stella Wafula who is ruled out of the weekend action due to a suspected concussion and will be replaced by Yvette Oketch who had been named as a reserve player in the squad.

"The players are fine and in good health and bally spirits. At the moment we only have one injury but it's not a bad one, but Stella Wafula is out with a suspected concussion and will be replaced by one of the player 13s who we had carried. She will be replaced by Yvette Oketch who comes into the team."

Lionesses headline group A alongside neighbors Uganda and Belgium.

Lionesses amassed a maximum 20 points from the opening leg of the 2025 Challenger Series with, with their ultimate goal being finishing at the top once again to ensure their qualification for the crucial third leg set to take place in Krakow, Poland.

A good show in Poland will be essential for the team’s ambitions, as a top-four finish in that stage will guarantee them a place in the Playoffs in Los Angeles.
