Leopards complete season double over Mathare United

AFC Leopards completed the FKF Premier League season double over Mathare United on Sunday as they claimed a 2-1 comeback victory at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Eugene Mukangula scored on the stroke of half-time to cancel Eugene Wethuli’s seventh-minute opener for Mathare and Fasanmi Ojo struck the winner in the second half.

Victory moved Leopards further away from the danger area and was their second over Mathare in just three days, following another comeback success on Thursday when they won 3-1 at the same venue.

For Mathare, defeat left them in more jeopardy as they remained second from the bottom with just seven points from 16 matches. Only one point separates them from basement side Vihiga Bullets who have played one game short.

In Thika, Gor Mahia FC endured a frustrating afternoon and needed a Samuel Onyango penalty draw 1-1 with the hosts Bidco United who had led through Stephen Waruru.

KCB FC moved into third with a 2-1 win over Posta Rangers at Kasarani Annex while Ulinzi Stars and Police FC battled for a 2-2 draw in Nakuru.

Mathare were playing for the first time under Francis Xavier as interim boss following the exit of head coach Ezekiel Akwana who resigned the day after Thursday’s loss.

That tenure began in promising fashion when Wethuli scored from close range to put the hosts in charge before Mukangula struck to leave the contest tied at 1-1 heading into the break.   

The club's top scorer collected the ball just outside the eighteen and dribbled past the Mathare defense before sending a shot into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the campaign.

Ojo put Leopards in front and it was all thanks to the lovely combination play between Maxwell Otieno and Peter Thiong'o who set up the Nigerian import to finish in the 58th minute.

Mukangula who was voted the man of the match could have earned his double with a long range effort but goalkeeper Bryne Omondi did well to push it away with a superb stop.
