KSSSA Games: Maseno School, Nyakach Girls reign supreme in Rugby 7s

Maseno School and Nyakach Girls are the Rugby Sevens champions in the 2024 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two Kisumu County School Games.

Nyakach Girls High School rallied from behind to upset Koru Girls 32-10 in the finals to win the title, shocking the latter who had led 10-0 at the breather.

On the other hand Maseno showed Otieno Oyoo High School who the rugby bosses were with a 7-0 win in a tight and fiercely contested match staged Saturday at the Maseno School.

Maseno broke the deadlock courtesy of halfback Philip Patrick. His quick thinking and agility off a scrum-down allowed him to seize the ball and sprint to the whitewash scoring the lone try of the match to hand Maseno the coveted trophy. 

Both Maseno and Otieno Oyoo had already secured their spots in the upcoming KSSSA Nyanza Region games before the final. Otieno Oyoo, who are under the tutelage of former Administration Police head coach Oscar Okaron, found their way to the finals by upsetting Nyabondo High School 17-5 in the semifinals to end an eight-year drought to qualify for the regional tournament.

Otieno Oyoo had earlier on shared the spoils 7-7 against Kisumu Day in the group stage; they later followed this with a decisive 26-0 win over Nyamasaria secondary school in the final pool match. They then advanced by defeating Onjiko 10-5 in the Cup quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Sebastian Makalek-coached side Maseno School ran riot over Kisumu Day in the semifinals with a 49-0 win to secure their ticket to the finals.
