Kenya's U23 3x3 basketball teams eye success at FIBA World Cup
The Kenya U23 3x3 basketball teams are brimming with confidence
and determination as they prepare for the upcoming FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup in
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The men’s and women’s teams, comprising eight players, two
coaches, team doctor, and a physiotherapist, have been hard at training camp at
Strathmore grounds in Nairobi, and are
ready to represent Kenya at the international stage.
The men’s squad features standout players such as David
Gichohi, Elisha Odhiambo, Jackson Waweru, and Denis Koja, under the expert
guidance of Coach Tonny Ochieng.
Meanwhile, the women’s team will miss the services of player
Medina Okot who travelled to the USA to join Mississippi State University on a
full scholarship. In her place joins Emily Bosibori. Maryanne Nyagaki who has
since turned 24 years old since the last tournament has been replaced by Judith
Omedi. They will be led by an experienced captain MaryLisa Omondi and Barbra
Achieng while Eunice Ouma will coach the ladies.
Both teams have had dedicated months of rigorous preparation
to sharpen their skills and enhance team cohesion.
This tournament not only offers a platform to demonstrate
their abilities but also serves as a crucial opportunity to accumulate points
for the 2028 Olympics.
Coach Tonny Ochieng emphasized that the men’s team focused on critical aspects such as game management, closing out games, and
improving shooting accuracy to avoid past mistakes. He says they have studied
their opponents’ strengths to devise effective strategies, with hopes of
securing at least two victories to advance to the semi-finals.
Similarly, the women’s team has made significant strides in
shooting, team chemistry, and game management, despite challenges posed by
league commitments.
