Kenya’s Togo-bound team breaks camp

Following the postponement of the 6th Africa Cross Country Championships, the Kenyan team for the continental showpiece has closed its residential training camp at Kigari Teachers Training College, Embu.

Kenya selected a team of 42 athletes for the event during the national cross country championships held on February 13 with the team heading to camp on February 17.

The championships were slated for Lome, Togo on March 6-7 before the hosts postponed the event to a later date citing the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the West African country.

Despite the postponement of the event a week ago, Athletics Kenya (AK) had maintained that the team would remain in camp until they received a final verdict form the host country and the Confederations of African Athletics (CAA) on the fate of the championship.

AK President Jackson Tuwei on Thursday led a delegation from the federation that included Vice President Paul Mutwii and Chief Administrative Officer Susan Kamau to close the camp with athletes set to be released on Friday.

The fate of the championships still hangs in the balance with CAA yet to communicate new dates for the bi-annual event that has now been postponed twice as it was initially planned to be held last year also in Togo.
