Kabras Sugar head coach Carlos Katywa has warned lack of prize money will demoralise the playing unit and also negatively impact the sport in the long run.

Kabras successfully defended their Kenya Cup title but Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has since revealed no prize awards for the winners due to financial constraints bedeviling the union.

Katywa, who didn’t want to point fingers on anyone specifically, noted it was disappointing to end a perfect season in such an unacceptable manner.

“Let me leave that (the lack of prize money for Kenya cup winners) to the politicians, sometimes coaches view’s can get him into so much trouble but it’s very disappointing; even the boys were asking why do we have to play in this competition if we are playing for nothing?

"There are quite a lot of disappointing things that have transpired this season in terms of administration and the union (KRU) but we are not concentrating on that; that belongs to the politicians. My job is to coach the players within the four lines and what happens beyond that is for the (KRU) chairman,” he explained.

Katywa however thanked their sponsor Kabras Sugar Company, well wishers and their fans that came through for the boys to ensure they took home something after such a gruelling season.

“If it wasn’t for our sponsor, our beloved supporters  - you know the boys got some money from our supporters who pledged something towards them for a brilliant season again, there would have been nothing at all. So we would like to thank our beloved supporters, our beloved chairman, our beloved sponsor, our beloved County Governor; all the people who came in during this celebration and pledged something for the boys.

"At least it’s something they can take home, they can make a difference at home, just to say to their parents, “Hey this is what I got, thank you for putting up with my awkward hours of travelling and playing. It’s not a lot but it’s something one can bring home.”

Kabras put on a scintillating performance to dispatch their familiar foes KCB RFC 29-05 at the Kakamega Showground to complete a three-peat.

“The guys celebrated very well, I think it was well deserved. They overloaded KCB with total dominance, I too was shocked at how the boys came out guns blazing and maintained it all the way to the last minute, so they deserved the celebrations.  I think now it’s time just to let the bodies recover."

Kabras can now put up their feet and rest after a season where they showed no signs of slowing down in their quest to establish total dominance in the Kenyan rugby scene.
