Kakamega School dominates Kakamega Central sub county games in rugby 7s rampage

Eight-time rugby 15s and five-time rugby 7s KSSSA national champions, Kakamega School, recorded a statement win that echoed their storied past in the Kakamega Central Sub County Games held at Kakamega School on Saturday.

Under the tutelage of Coach Amos Wamanga, the team delivered a series of impressive victories to qualify for the county championships.

Kakamega dominated their matches, defeating Shikoti 51-0, Ikonyero 34-0, and Ebambwa 29-0 before running riot over Shieywe Secondary with a 55-0 win. These results secured their ticket to the county games set for June 6th at St. Peter's Mumias High School, Kakamega.

Kakamega School, boasting a rich legacy in Kenyan school rugby, is seeking to break their nine-year jinx and return to national competition.

The school last featured in the rugby 7s nationals in 2015, where they won the championship. However, they have not appeared at the national championships since 2013 in rugby 7s and 2019 in the rugby 15s version.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, head coach Amos Wamanga expressed confidence in the team's potential.

"We have a relatively very young team that is hungry for success. They are gelling and playing well, and we are targeting a return to the nationals," he said. "We want to assure our fans we have prepared well from last year, and the way they are playing, we believe we've got everything to beat this season," he concluded.

Kakamega School has been active in recent months, preparing for the KSSSA term two games. The school finished third in the Scrummage Katch 7s tournament and has hosted a series of friendly matches.

Kakamega will face tough competition from host St. Peter's Mumias and the high-rising St. Ignatius Mukumu Boys High School.
