Kabras raid the vault to leave KCB limping, win Kenya Cup for the third straight year
Kabras Sugar are the 2023/2024 Kenya Cup champions after demolishing a hapless KCB RFC side 29-05 at the Kakamega Showground.
The Sugar men have been unplayable all season and once again
showed they are a level above the rest as they capitalized on countless KCB
mistakes to secure their third title on the trot.
Kabras didn’t waste any time to send their first warning to
the bankers as they raided their safe in the opening exchanges through the
mercurial Walter Okoth with Ntabeni Dukisa who sported a new haircut drilled in
the conversion to lead 7-0.
Dukisa would then score a penalty to extend the early lead
to 10-0 as KCB scampered to establish a rhythm in the forest.
Shujaa’s utility man Kevin Wekesa went over the whitewash
minutes later and Dukisa wasn’t in the mood to miss as he added the extras to
put Kabras in a commanding 22-0 lead.
KCB’s danger man Vincent Onyala was their saving grace going
to half time as he landed an unconverted try to gain KCB’s opening and only
points in the game that once again reminded the rugby fraternity of Kabras’
prowess in the local league.
Just before they went to break KCB pushed back the hosts in
their own half and managed to get a try through Vincent Onyala.
In the second half, both teams played better defensively,
but it was the millers who squeezed in a try through their talisman Brian Tanga
and Dukisa scored the conversion.
KCB RFC coach Curtis Olago praised his Boys for an
outstanding performance throughout the league cup to the finals.
"We are in a transition period, and the boys showed
character to reach to the finals despite the loss to Kabras RFC," he said.
However Kabras RFC coach Carlos Katywa was excited with the
win saying his team had a plan that they executed well and also congratulated
their opponents for giving them a gun-blazing fight.
"We had a plan and the boys played according to instructions, the boys deserve credit for everything that they give to the club and our fans." He said.
Brian Tanga was rapid in the middle of the pack as he meticulously
distributed the ball to keep Kabras in possession as they slowly by slowly
drained the life out of lions.
He would later be rewarded for his display as he scored a
try in the last exchanges which proved to be the last nail on KCB’s coffin and
Ntabeni Dukisa couldn’t miss as he drilled in the extras off his quintessential
right foot.
At last, KCB had no answers to all the questions asked by
the defending champions Kabras Sugar who successfully defended their crown for
the third year on the bounce.
Kabras RFC ended the 2023-2024 regular season in the overall
position on the Kenya Cup standings undefeated.
