Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has challenged the Kakamega county government under the leadership of Governor Fernandes Barasa, to consider supporting AFC Leopards, as one of the measures of improving the club.
Citing Shabana
FC as "the perfect example" of how Kisii and Nyamira county governments have extended support to the
Gusii-based league club, Khalwale is of
the view the Kakamega county gov't should replicate the same to the 12-time
league champions.
“When we wrote
the new constitution we specified clearly that sports will be devolved to the
county governments.
As we talk now I
want to applaud the four counties from Nyanza region for giving Shabana FC the
much needed financial support especially Nyamira and Kisii counties.
But here in
Kakamega it is the exact opposite because the money that we should have
channeled to support Leopards, the governor has instead decided to finance
Kakamega Homeboyz under Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula.
That is not what Leopards fans will want to hear because Ingwe is our team and a symbol of Western unity,”Khalwale charged.
Khalwale also
called on Leopards’ incoming office, which will be ushered in after the June 29
elections, to put in place a formidable plan, of steering the club to greater
heights.
“The vision that
the club has must be that which will help fix the problems of the team. I have
a plan and it is not about coming up with tournaments for Leopards to play in
them. For the incoming chairman, you must have a plan for the team,” he said,
adding “Ingwe is a big team with rich history and maximum respect regionally
and in the continent. We should get back to our glory days of winning titles.”
Khalwale also ants
Ingwe to partner with Western region secondary schools in sourcing good talents
for the betterment of the team.
