Christie 7s top try scorer Ramadhan Masete has set his eyes firmly on securing a spot in the national sevens team, Shujaa, after a perfect start to the 7s season.

Masete who starred for Homeboyz RFC in the opening leg of the National Seven’s Circuit scored eight tries helping the Deejays to reach the challenge cup semifinals.

“I’m hoping to be in top form all the season so that at the end of the Circuit I can secure a national team call up. I’m a Kenyan and my dream is to play for the national team; I would feel extremely proud representing my nation,” said Masete.

Masete says the Shujaa technical bench led by head coach Kevin 'Bling' Wambua has given opportunities to young players and that gives him the extra motivation to keep knocking on the door.

“When you see the number of young players in the national team motivates me more because I feel there is something I can do from outside and impress the coach. There is something I miss and its being in that team.”

Homeboyz looked in good form all the weekend and will hope they replicate the same form across the season as Masete says it’s possible for them to challenge the heavyweights.

“Without the support of my teammates I wouldn’t have emerged as the top try scorer here (Christie 7s). Everyone played their role and when the ball got to me, I did my part too. From the Homeboyz team, my work is to score because I’m a winger, that’s the work of a winger so I will just tell our fans to expect more from me.”

Homeboyz are in Pool for this weekend’s Kakamega 7s alongside Catholic Monks, Kisumu RFC and Menengai Oilers.

The 2024 Christie 7s champions Kabras Sugar headline pool A with neighbors MMUST RFC, Western Bulls and Blak Blad for company.

The defending National 7s Circuit champions KCB RFC will hope for redemption in the forest as they battle Strathmore Leos, Nakuru RFC and the newly promoted Stallions rugby.
