Kenya’s national boxing team, Hit Squad, skipper Boniface Mogunde has implored the Boxing Federation of Kenya to incorporate the new IBA 1-Star referees into their training programs in a bid to enhance the team’s comprehension of the scoring system used in international competitions.

Mogunde says such a development would be a move in the right direction in attempts to expedite the game’s growth in Kenya while improving the performance of Kenyan boxers on the international stage.

“Understanding how the judges score each bout can make the difference between winning and losing. Often, we boxers put in our best effort but are left frustrated when the results don’t go our way.

“This can sometimes be due to our lack of understanding of the technicalities in scoring,” he remarked.

His proposal is crucial for Kenyan boxers as they prepare for key events in the international boxing calendar.

Despite showing resilience and dedication, Hit Squad have often faced challenges due to the complexities of the scoring system that hinder their performances.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) uses a specific point system based on clean punches, ring control, and defense.

While the athletes are aware of these aspects, having referees who are certified and trained under IBA regulations in their training programs could provide invaluable insights into the system’s operations.

Mogunde said this step would help the team avoid common mistakes and maximize scoring opportunities during matches.

While responding to Mogunde’s request, BFK communications director Duncan Kuria acknowledged the criticalness of the request, assuring the team that they would work towards its fulfillment.

“We recognize the value of having IBA-certified referees as part of the training setup.

We will prioritize it to ensure that our boxers are well-prepared for upcoming international competitions," said Kuria.

This move is seen as a positive step towards aligning Kenyan boxing with international standards.

Hit Squad have shown great potential, and with a better understanding of the scoring system, the team could achieve even greater success.
