Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies
of South Africa had to go through penalty shootouts to eliminate Malabo Kings
of Equatorial Guinea from the CAF Women’s Champions League to book a ticket to
the final, winning 5-4 on the lotteries after a barren draw in additional time.
The COSAFA Zonal
Champions finished top of Group B with seven points which set up a semi-final
clash with Group A’s second-placed side in Malabo Kings who wrapped up the
group stage with four points.
Both sides were unable
to find the back of the net after 90 minutes and additional 30 minutes of extra
time which made the game go into penalty shootouts.
The match was also the
second game without a goal after Mamelodi Sundowns’ last group game against
ASFAR FC of Morocco.
Zanele Nhlapho,
Bambanani Nolufefe Mbane, Nonhlanhla Mthandi, Lerato Kgasago, and Bongiwe
Precious Thusi scored their spot kicks for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC while
Bella Rose, Eugenia Bokoka Mosua, Muriellynda Mendoua Abossolo, and Grâce
Balongo Mfwamba converted Malabo Kings’ penalty kicks.
Chantelle Esau missed
her penalty kick for Mamelodi Sundowns while the duo of Salome Nke and Fanta
Florence missed their spot-kicks for Malabo Kings which ensured that the South
African side recorded a 5-4 win on penalties to book a final date with Hasaacas
Ladies FC of Ghana.
“It was a good match,
once gain I congratulate my defenders for the good job done because if it was
not for them then we could have conceded so many goals. Malabo was a strong
side to beat and as you know in penalties there is no star.
Going to the finals we believe it will be
tough but I will motivate my players to score more goals,” said Mamelodi head
coach Jerry Tshabalala who followed the match from the stands after he was given
marching orders booked for provoking the center referee.
Hasaacas Ladies on their part qualified to the
final after defeating Morocco's ASFAR 2-1 in another semifinal.
Hasaacas Ladies scored in
the first half via Doris Boaduwaa, before ASFAR equalized through Najat Badri just
before the break before Evelyn Badu scored the match winner for Hassacas Ladies
to end the game 2-1.
Asfar will now meet Malabo
Kings on Thursday for the third winner decider match at the 30 June Stadium in
the evening.
