Harambee Starlets forward Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi has confirmed that she is on the verge of joining a European club, which she did not name, after her contract with Club Municipal de Laayouyne of Morocco lapsed at the end of the season.

Wanyonyi, who hails from Webuye, Bungoma County, started her football career at Misemwa Primary School before joining Utithi Secondary School in Makueni, and later Archbishop Njenga Girls High School in Kakamega.

In an exclusive interview on Citizen Digital, Wanyonyi said moving to Europe has been her dream since she was young.

She confirmed that the new deal is 80 per cent complete and she will unveil the details of her new club once she signs the contract, although unconfirmed reports indicate she is planning a move to Turkey.

Wanyonyi joined the North Africa-based side in October 2022 in a two-year contract, and assisted the team to finish in third place in her first season, alongside emerging as the top scorer notching 23 goals in 26 matches.

“I can say it is official that I have completed my contract with Municipal de Laayouyne, and I’m now heading to Europe. I can’t reveal the details about where I’m exactly heading to until the deal is sealed. It has been my dream since a tender age to play football in Europe,” she said.

“I feel that I achieved a lot and made a legacy while playing in Morocco as I emerged top scorer in the first season and managing 20 goals in the second season. I was to join a European club after my first season was done, but after the club bosses saw my determination, they urged me to stay and finish my contract. Due to their nice treatment and kindness, I opted to stay until the end of my contract,” she added.

After completing her secondary school studies, Wanyonyi, a first born in a family of five, joined Trans Nzoia Falcons where she emerged the second best top scorer in 2020, one goal behind the then defending champions Thika Queens forward Mwanahalima Adam Jereko.

Wanyonyi also played for Vihiga Queens on loan during the 2020/21 season scoring one of the two goals they notched in Egypt during the inaugural Women Champions League in November last year.

She scored against Morocco's ASFAR in a match that ended 2-0 in Queens’ favour.
