Former Kenyan international Charles Okwemba has backed veteran coach Robert Matano to succeed at KCB following his appointment as the club’s new head coach.

Matano takes over from Patrick Odhiambo, who was sacked after a string of poor results that saw the team’s performance dip at a crucial stage of the season.

Okwemba believes Matano’s vast experience and winning mentality will be key to turning things around for the bankers.

“He is a respected coach who has won titles with different clubs. KCB knows they are getting a proven winner with the experience needed to bring success to the team. I’m confident he will deliver, provided he receives the necessary support,” said Okwemba.

Matano, known for his no-nonsense approach and tactical discipline, has led several clubs to domestic success, including four Kenya Premier League titles with different teams.

Reflecting on his time playing under Matano at AFC Leopards, Okwemba noted that major squad changes may not be necessary.

“The team already has quality players. They just need a few reinforcements in key departments. I believe the management will support the technical bench in building a strong squad,” he added.

Okwemba also raised concerns about the national team’s readiness ahead of the upcoming CHAN (African Nations Championship) tournament.

The former AFC Leopards midfielder urged the Football Kenya Federation to resolve ongoing leadership wrangles, which he fears could derail Harambee Stars’ preparations.

“These wrangles and the confusion we are seeing are tarnishing the image of the country and the federation. We should be in the final stages of preparation, but that’s not what is happening. There’s an urgent need to resolve these issues and prioritise the national team’s readiness for the tournament,” Okwemba emphasised.
