Former Kenya Harlequins head coach Paul ‘Pau’ Murunga has slammed the leadership wrangles bedevilling the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU), saying they are a result of individualism and greed.

Pau didn’t mince his words as he rendered a brutal assessment of the current board of directors of the union, saying the majority of the officials have overstayed in their positions.

“Right now, people are deviating away from the game because if actually it could be we are doing this because of the game, I think Sasha has done it and if you remember the last tenure that has been in, we had no sponsor on board.

“Sasha has come in, has brought in more sponsors and players are playing, the game is growing, girls have performed, players are performing. So, I think as much as they are fighting, it's more of an individualism and because if it could be people could be affected down right now, but you will see players are just playing and are happy and performing.

“So, I think it's more of an individualism and people trying to make their own shenanigans to lead into the national, into the union.”

The former Shujaa tactician has in the meantime challenged fresh blood in the game to step up and seek positions from their clubs, as a way of climbing up the ladder into the board.

“Some directors who have overstayed at the director position, and they don't want to relinquish that position. And it's so hard even for the junior guys to tell them to grow up to get to that particular point. And we just bow down to clubs, because actually it's clubs that are electing those people.”

He continued: “as much as we are saying that they have overstayed there, and yet they are being elected, this is another big issue. I think it's just a challenge to the young guys who are coming up. Let us open our minds, let us grow, for us at least to start going in for the director positions and let us at least stand up to show that you can lead because as much as we are crying over overstay, there's no one who's coming up to say he wants to beat into it.”

Pau is now calling for total disbandment of the current board and allow for fresh elections.

“Of course, I cannot say everyone there is bad. There are some one or two guys that are also trying their level best to ignore the sport. But for me, if I was given a chance, I would just say, I think world rugby should just take some serious actions that can assist us in just getting rid of the entire board so that we just start afresh. With this, it will even affect our 15s campaign, which of course has already started.”

Fans and other rugby stakeholders have been calling for the disbandment of the KRU board after it ousted former chairman Sasha Mutai from office a month ago.
