Dominant KCB on brink of Series title

Giants KCB RFC are a heartbeat away from winning the 2019 National Sevens Circuit after sailing to the last eight of the Driftwood Sevens in style on Saturday.

Drawn in Pool A with Administration Police, Kenya Harlequins and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), the Bankers recorded a flying start at the Mombasa Sports Club whipping all ther group opponents to advance to the last eight with action set to intensify tomorrow.

Topping the circuit standings on 94 points, 10 ahead of second placed Mwamba, the bankers need just 13 points to seal a memorable feat.

By the time the curtains come down on the last stop of the 2019 series tomorrow at 6pm, this dream is likely to be attained as they just need to secure a fifth place finish to be crowned as the best team of the campaign.

Winning the Driftwood Sevens will hand them some 22points, a nine point luxury than they need.

The Dennis Mwanja coached side have already had a treble of titles this campaign claiming the top gong in Kakamega, Kisumu(Dala Sevens) and at the Christie Sevens held in Nairobi last weekend at the RFUEA grounds

And on Saturday at the Mombasa Sports Club, Mwanja`s charges showcased the ruthless side of their game whipping Administration Police 36-0, Harlequins 31-0 and MMUST 24-12.

Vincent Onyala, the series leading try scorer bagged a hat trick against Police while Levy Amunga, Samuel Asati and Jacob Ojee also wrote their names on the scoresheet, as Amunga made three converstions.

Quins were also administered a similar dose of medicine, Andrew Amonde going under the whitewash as Onyala and Geoffrey Okwatch bagged a brace of tries while Levy and Johnstone Olindi made the conversions.

Students MMUST probably handed the bankers their sternest test in the 24-12 defeat of the western Kenya based side but there was still room for Amonde, Isaac Njoroge, Olindi, Okwatch and Samuel Asati to shine, all claiming a try apiece.

Should KCB lift the overall title, which is now a matter of when but not if, it will be their first national series title since 2014.

Burly Amonde is purring ahead of tomorrow, he said: “We just have to keep playing according to our system, and as hard as possible.

“We have a very good team capable of going all the way.”
