Confusion at Nzoia as only six return for training
Confusion has rocked Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier
League side Nzoia Sugar after only six players reported for training ahead of
the new season.
Citizen Digital understands the situation has been occasioned by the
club’s financial constraints that have seen the team lose several players at
the end of the 2022/23 Season where the Millers managed a fourth-place finish.
The club’s outgoing
chairman Evans Kadenge has confirmed the situation, and he is calling on
leaders from the Western region to come in and help the team.
“Only six players reported
back to the training, a situation that has occasioned the team’s financial
inability to pay players. I understand some players have not joined any team, and are simply protesting their pay. We still owe these players some money
despite performing well last season.
“This situation will worsen
since the management has suspended operations at the millers for four months. I
am calling on leaders from this region to come in and salvage the situation,”
Kadenge said.
Amid all these protests,
the soft-spoken administrator insisted the team has only released two players,
and the rest who are yet to report to the training are still Nzoia Sugar
players.
“We have only released two
players; Kevin Juma who joined Gor Mahia, and Joseph Mwangi has joined Tusker;
the rest remain Nzoia players with contracts still running,” he affirmed.
Meanwhile, the club has
appointed Yapets Mokua as their new chairman, replacing Evans Kadenge who is
retiring.
Mokua, alongside his newly-constituted executive committee, is tasked with leading the club into a new era as they try to address the pressing issue of the financial instability at the club.
