Collins Kabayo reflects on thrilling Rugby Super Series debut

Collins Kabayo, a forward for the South Coast Pirates Rugby Club, expressed his immense gratitude and excitement after making his dream debut in the 2024 Rugby Super Series.

Kabayo, who also played for the KCB Lions, shared his appreciation for the opportunity to compete at a higher level.

"It's been a great experience," Kabayo said. "Playing with and against members of the Kenyan rugby team has always been something I've looked forward to. Competing on a bigger stage has taught me valuable lessons that will help me grow and improve in the sport, and for that, I am grateful," he told Citizen Digital.

Kabayo's debut in the Rugby Super Series saw him playing for the KCB Lions, who finished second after a hard-fought 18-10 loss to the Menengai Cheetahs in the finals at RFUEA grounds in Nairobi last weekend.

Looking ahead, Kabayo is eager to represent the national team. "I look forward to donning the national team colours when the opportunity arises. I would love to play for Kenya Simbas soon," he noted.

The 24-year-old back row is now focused on helping the Pirates retain their top-flight status. His performance and experience are expected to be crucial as the Pirates prepare for their maiden top-flight appearance in the Kenya Rugby Union Kenya Cup league, which begins in September.

The Pirates secured promotion to the 2023/24 Kenya Rugby Union Kenya Cup league alongside Impala RFC after defeating the Daystar Falcons in the semi-finals at Seacrest International Grounds in Ukunda last month.

Kabayo played a key role in the Diani-based team's success, scoring a brace in the semi-finals to bring his season tally to five tries.

The 2024 Rugby Super Series marked its return after a 10-year hiatus, with the last edition held in 2013.
