National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) handball team’s
head coach Bryan Matthews believes they will reign supreme in this year’s
edition of Super Cup.
NCPB are targeting a double to cap their memorable season
after winning the handball league title in May with Matthews keen to reclaim
the silverware which they relinquished last year to Equity.
The tactician has noted that he has all the necessary tools
to ascend to the title with no major concerns on the fitness of his players.
“Everyone in the squad knows our target and we are working
towards it. Super Cup is our target and we are going to fight for it,” Matthews
told Citizen Digital.
NCPB kicked off their quest for the Super Cup on Saturday
with a dominant 41-23 against Strathmore with Matthews insisting they will
treat each game as a final.
Attacker Stephen Wanyonyi was instrumental in marshalling
the Cereals to thumb Strathmore on Saturday at Nyayo Stadium handball court and
Matthews will be relying on the in-form danger man to lead them to the title
charge.
“We will take a game at a time and each game is like a final
to us. We are not going to underrate any opponent because everyone in the
competition has eyes on the prize,” noted Matthews.
Matthews says they have been studying their close rivals and
defending champions Equity, KDF and GSU to know where they can hurt them when
they meet them in the knockout stages of the competition next weekend.
“Equity, KDF and GSU have good players, they have also made
decent signings and we will not underrate them. We’ve studied them and we know
where we can hurt them but for now our focus is on our next match.”
NCPB will play GSU in their last Pool A match on Saturday
morning before advancing to the knockout stages.
Semi-finals will be played later that evening with the
finale for both men and women scheduled for Sunday.
