Bunyore plot Vihiga Queens fall in KWPL derby

Bunyore Starlets head coach Timothy Ondeko has cautioned his charges against laxity as the Vihiga-based team face four-time Kenyan Women Premier League champions Vihiga Queens on Sunday at Moi Stadium Kisumu.

Ondeko feels that Bunyore Starlets are still in the danger zone on the premier league table, despite shooting to fifth position with 16 points.

While there could be a true sense of safety from relegation from the top league this season which has been a scare for Ondeko’s charges all through, he is still dreading such a feat.

"We are facing Vihiga Queens who are struggling to defend their title, with the coming of Police Bullets. In a similar manner, we want to avoid relegation. There is a need for my players to be cautious since the difference between us and the teams below us is very little," Ondeko noted.

"Vihiga Queens is a big team in Kenya, in fact the most successful team in history - but we must beat them to be on the safe side. As we slide towards the end of this season with only five matches left, we want to pick up as many points as possible," Ondeko added, noting that the five remaining matches are important for Bunyore to finish among the four top teams.

Ondeko says it will be a tough experience for his players this weekend, who lost 4-2 in the first leg at Mumboha Sports Ground last year.

Both teams head into the derby with a sense of motivation having won their last weekend matches.

Vihiga Queens beat Zetech Sparks FC 1-0 to climb into the second position with 31 points in Nairobi, while Bunyore Starlets thrashed Bungoma Queens 3-1 at Mumboha.
