Athletics Kenya (AK) has cancelled the national trials for the World Athletics Indoor Championships that were scheduled for January 30–31 in Nairobi.

In a statement released on Monday, the federation cited unavoidable circumstances for the decision.

“Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all athletes, officials and stakeholders that the World Athletics Indoor Trials that were scheduled to take place on January 30–31, 2026 in Nairobi have been cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances,” the statement read.

AK confirmed that the team to the championships will now be selected through a time-based and merit-based process once the World Athletics qualification window closes on March 8.

“Athletics Kenya will proceed with the selection of athletes who will represent the country at the World Athletics Indoor Championships through a time-based and merit-based selection process,” AK added.

The selection will cover the men’s 60m, women’s 60m hurdles, and the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m for both men and women.

The World Athletics Indoor Championships will be held from March 20–22 in Kuyavian–Pomeranian, Poland.

At the last edition in Nanjing, China, Kenya failed to win a medal, with Susan Ejore finishing fifth in the women’s 1500m, while Cornelius Kemboi and Purity Gitonga placed eighth in the 3,000m a difficult outing for coach Janeth Jepkosgei’s squad.
