Kenya Under-20 captain Amos Wanjala has set his sights on making the most of a major career opportunity after completing a move to Spanish giants Valencia CF, joining the club’s reserve side, VCF Mestalla.
The 19-year-old defender was officially unveiled on
Sunday, January 25, as the academy’s first signing of the current transfer
window, bringing an end to his 15-month spell with Spanish fifth-tier outfit
Athletic Club Torrellano.
Speaking after sealing the move, Wanjala expressed
pride and gratitude at joining one of Spain’s most respected football
academies, while also highlighting the significance of representing both his
family and his country on a bigger stage.
“I am very happy to be here. This is something I
have been looking forward to for a long time,” Wanjala said.
“I give all the glory to God, and I thank my family
for supporting me, as well as my country, which I am proud to represent here in
Valencia. This is a great club with a big history, and the academy also has a
great tradition. It’s a huge opportunity for me, and I’m determined to make the
most of it and achieve more.”
Under the terms of his deal, strong performances
with VCF Mestalla could open the door for Wanjala to earn promotion to the
Valencia CF senior team.
The young defender is eager to settle in quickly,
build chemistry with his new teammates, and contribute on the pitch.
“I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates,
getting to know the technical staff, and working even harder to achieve
something special in the league,” he added.
“My family has been close to me throughout this
journey, and I’m happy that they’re proud. I also know that many Kenyans are
looking up to me, so my full focus is now on the team. I send hugs to my mum,
my sisters, and everyone back home.”
VCF Mestalla currently compete in the Segunda RFEF
Group 3, where they sit 12th in the 18-team table with 24 points from 20
matches.
They return to action on Saturday, January 31, when
they face Alcoyano at Valencia’s state-of-the-art Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna
training complex.
