AK cancels African Games trials in honour of Kiptum

Athletics Kenya (AK) has cancelled the
trials for the All Africa Games that were set for this weekend in honour of
world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum who died in a car crash.
Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana
died in the tragic incident that occurred along the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine road
on Sunday night.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on
Wednesday, AK said the two-day event that was set to be held this Friday and
Saturday at the Nyayo Stadium has been cancelled with a new selection process
to be announced.
“Athletics Kenya wishes to inform all
athletes and the entire athletics fraternity that the Trials for African Games
which were to be held on 16th and 17th February 2024 at The Nyayo National
Stadium has been cancelled in honor of the late Kelvin Kiptum.” The statement
read.
AK was set to use the event to pick a
team to represent the country during this year’s All Africa Games slated for
March 8-23 in Accra, Ghana.
