Worst athlete in history? Outrage over Somalia's 'slowest-ever' 100-meter runner

Somalia's Nasra Abukar Ali during the 100 meters games in China. She completed the race dead last in 21.8 seconds

Twitter, and social media as a whole, have been ignited by a video of a women's 100-metre race during the 31st Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Jamaica's Usain Bolt does it in 9.58 seconds, Shericka Jackson, the fastest woman alive does it in 10.65. Enough with the fastest, meet Somalia's Nasra Abukar Ali who ran the 100-metre race in a record 21 seconds.

The clip shows pretty much what happens at any other standard race, anywhere in the world - until you look closely and notice the almost-comical performance of one particular athlete from Somalia, who reportedly completed the race in a staggering 21 seconds.

The athlete has since been identified as Nasra Abukar Ali, who, judging from the videos, is a rotund, pot-bellied lass with frizzly hair.

Hundreds of dismayed Twitter users have been circulating the clip and slamming Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports for sending the obviously "untrained" athlete to such a high-profile competition.

In the video, as other female athletes gear up for the race - by prancing about, crouching, etc - Ms Ali is seen standing around idly, totally confused about what to do.

As soon as the buzzer goes, the other girls shoot ahead, athletically, leaving behind Ms. Ali who now appears to be merely jogging along, unbothered.

The Somali athlete is eventually left so far behind that, even after the rest have long crossed the finish line, she can still be seen trodding on, leisurely flipping around her arms.

Cameras picked her up almost skipping over the finishing line around 10 seconds after winner Gabriela Silva Mourao, who clocked in at 11.58 seconds.

People are now calling her the worst athlete in history to have participated in the international games, saying she has set the "record for the slowest finish" in the history of the competition.

Elham Garaad, a Somali medic based in the US, was one of the disappointed people who shared the clip of the event on Twitter, accusing the Somalian authorities of nepotism.

"That's the niece of the President of the Somali Athletics Federation. What you expecting? Nepotism! We have good athletes in Somalia but when it comes to money, is a different story," she tweeted.

CNN journalist Larry Madowo too chimed in, sharing the clip of the hysterical race, unable to decipher what exactly was happening himself.

"She is unbothered and this is the energy I need in my entire life, honestly," Larry Madowo says. "She's had a great time, she didn't win. She's here for a good time. I stan!"

Lately, some decisions by the Somali Sports Authorities have sparked outrage among other athletes, coaches and fans, who have argued that the most deserving and successful contenders have been overlooked in favour of political interests.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia said it had suspended Khadijo Aden Dahir, the chairwoman of the Somali Athletics Federation. It alleged Dahir had engaged in “acts of abuse of power, nepotism, and defaming the name of the nation in international arena,” in a letter addressed to the Somali National Olympic Committee and tweeted by the ministry.

Reacting to the incident, he said it was "misrepresentation and embarrassment" for Somalia.

Additionally, The Somali Athletics Federation said Khadija Aden Dahir, President of the Somali Athletics Federation, has been temporarily suspended and was accused of “national defamation.”

"It is clear to the ministry that Nasra (Abukar Ali) is not an athlete, and that Mrs. Khadija committed an act of abuse of power and defamation of the nation," the sports ministry said.
