If happiness were a global currency, Finland would be the world’s richest country. The World Happiness Report 2025 confirms that for the eighth consecutive year, Finland is the happiest country in the world, leaving the rest of us wondering—what’s in their water? Or more importantly, in their governance, society, and way of life?

Trailing closely behind are Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden, making it clear that if you want to live your best life, the Nordic region is the place to be.

These countries excel not just in GDP and social support but also in trust, freedom, and an impressive ability to return lost wallets. If you drop your wallet in Helsinki, you’re almost guaranteed to get it back. In contrast, try that in most parts of the world, and your wallet might just begin a new life without you.

Kenya ranks 115th in happiness, far from the top but still ahead of some of its regional neighbors. While economic challenges, corruption, and governance issues contribute to this ranking, Kenya shines in one key aspect—kindness.

The report highlights that Kenya is among the top five countries globally when it comes to helping strangers. This aligns with the famous Kenyan spirit of "Harambee" (pulling together), where communities rally to support those in need. Whether it’s a neighbor’s hospital bill or a stranded traveler in the city, Kenyans step in to help—wallet or no wallet.

Why are the happiest countries happy?

The happiest nations share some common traits:

·         Strong social support systems – Citizens trust their governments and each other.

·         Low corruption – Trust in institutions is high, and people feel protected.

·         Work-life balance – The "hustle culture" isn't a badge of honor; quality of life matters.

·         Generosity & social trust – Expecting kindness from others significantly boosts happiness.

Can Kenya move up the happiness ladder?

For Kenya to rise in the rankings, tackling corruption, improving public services, and strengthening economic opportunities are key.

However, Kenya’s strong sense of community and generosity are already world-class. Happiness is about more than GDP—it’s about people. And in that, Kenya is already winning.
