Violence mars Jamhuri Day celebrations in Meru, Mombasa

Jamhuri Day celebrations in Meru County were marred with chaos after police were forced to lob teargas to quell violence between Governor Peter Munya’s supporters and those supporting Senator Kiraitu Murungi.

There has been a protracted superiority battle in Meru County pitting the two leaders, with Senator Murungi aiming to trounce Munya in the 2017 gubernatorial race.

Munya rebranded the Party of National Unity (PNU), which he intends to use to defend his seat after refusing to join the Jubilee Party while Senator Murungi will vie on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Elsewhere, there was trouble at the Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa County after Nyali MP Hezron Awiti’s supporters invaded the grounds disrupting the event.

Awiti has declared his ambition to unseat Governor Hassan Joho in next year’s General Election.

Both leaders are eyeing a CORD ticket in the election.

In West Pokot, police had to intervene to calm the situation after supporters of Governor Simon Kachapin and Senator John Lunyang’apuo clashed during the Jamhuri Day celebrations.
