U.S Embassy in Kenya issues security alert over potential for increased crime, violence
The
United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a security alert over potential for increased
crime and violent extremism in the country.
The
embassy hence urged its citizens to exercise vigilance in public places
frequented by tourists such as shopping malls, hotels, airports, clubs,
restaurants, transportation hubs, schools, places of worship.
“Public
events, such as demonstrations and celebratory gatherings, are also at a higher
risk for violence,” said the embassy in a statement on Friday.
It
further urged U.S citizens to take such actions as reviewing their personal
security plans, being aware of their surroundings at all times, and monitoring media
for updates.
This
comes a day following a similar alert issued by the French and German embassies.
The
two countries on Thursday cautioned their citizens
to avoid public areas and crowded places it classified as possible hotspots.
The
Kenyan police service has since however allayed fears of a looming terror
attack, saying it is yet to officially receive reports from any of the said foreign
governments on the same.
Police spokesman Bruno Shioso assured Kenyans of their
safety citing that security has been heightened in Nairobi and other
metropolitan areas in the country.
