UN Chinese Language Day celebrated at UN Office in Nairobi

United Nations Chinese Language Day commemorated at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

In a lively celebration of linguistic diversity and cultural exchange, the United Nations Chinese Language Day was joyously commemorated at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Under the theme "Connecting Cultures Through the Bridge of Mutual Learning," the event brought together esteemed dignitaries and diplomats to honour the Chinese language's significance and its role in fostering global understanding.

The festivities at UNON were graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including UN Under-Secretary-General Zainab Hawa Bangura and Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian.

UN Under-Secretary-General Zainab Hawa Bangura urged attendees to embrace the beauty and power of multilingualism not only on this day but every day.

She remarked, "I encourage each and every one of you to celebrate the beauty and power of multilingualism not just today but every day. By learning a language, we avoid a war. Let us cherish multilingualism's unique ability to connect hearts and minds to celebrate our shared humanity and to contribute to a more inclusive and prosperous future."

Ambassador Zhou Pingjian's remarks provided insights into the Chinese perspective on international cooperation and the role of language in fostering mutual understanding.

He emphasized, "Interpreting the original meaning and intention of the United Nations from a Chinese language perspective may help people better understand the concepts of a community of shared future and win-win cooperation and shake off the small-bloc and zero-sum game mentality. It will truly make diversity and multilateralism the inexhaustible driving force of human progress."

Ambassador Zhou further highlighted China's unwavering support for the international system with the United Nations at its core, reaffirming China's commitment to promoting true multilateralism and exchanges among civilizations.
