Detectives from the Ethics and
Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday arrested two employees of Mumias
Level IV Hospital for allegedly soliciting a Ksh.200,000 bribe from a supplier
to facilitate payment for medical equipment.
The suspects, William Mmasava, a supply chain
officer, and Linet Kavaya, a biomedical engineer at the hospital, were arrested
at the KCB Mumias branch shortly after receiving the amount from the
complainant.
According to the EACC, preliminary
investigations revealed that the complainant’s company had supplied the hospital
with an X-ray scanner valued at Ksh.1.4 million.
The hospital agreed to pay in three
instalments and had already settled the first payment of Ksh.500,000 on April
17, 2025.
However, on May 8, the complainant was
allegedly contacted by the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. Mohammed
Munyendo, who demanded a bribe of Ksh.400,000 to facilitate the release of the
second instalment of Ksh.650,000.
The following day, the complainant met
with an administrator at the facility identified as Braxides Bunoro,
who allegedly made a similar demand.
Although the hospital deposited the second
instalment into the supplier’s KCB account, the money was inaccessible.
Instead, the complainant continued receiving coercive calls from Dr. Munyendo, Mrs.
Bunoro and Mrs Kavaya all demanding a bribe to unlock access to the payment.
The complainant filed a report with the EACC
on May 16, leading to the arrest of the two suspects just after they received
the Ksh.200,000 bribe.
The duo was taken to the EACC’s Western
Regional Office in Bungoma for processing and later detained at Bungoma Police
Station pending further investigations.
