Tragedy as student, 23, drowns in swollen river as rains begin

Residents of Tenwek area in Bomet County are mourning the death of a 23-year-old student of KMTC Kisii Campus who drowned in the Tenwek falls while swimming on Sunday evening.

The deceased was in the company of three other students when they decided to take a swim in the Tenwek falls that were raging owing to the onset of the rains.

“He asked us all to take a hike, him and another of our colleague decided to take a swim in the water,” said one of his colleagues.

One other student was lucky to escape with his life after a passerby spotted him struggling in the water and managed to rescue him.

“We came to swim with him here. He started to drown and so did I, but I was luckily rescued by a passerby who handed me a stick and pulled me out. At that time I was confused and weak and couldn’t help him”, another colleague told Citizen Digital.

Bomet County disaster management officers led by Stanley Mutai managed to retrieve the body and moved it to Longisa County mortuary.
