Traffic flow restored at Ahero Bridge after water levels reduce
The area had been rendered impassable from Saturday night after the river broke its banks, causing massive flooding within the area.
Traffic police officers are manning both ends of the bridge and motorists are now slowly able to travel into and out of Kisumu.
Earlier, the police advised motorists to use the Miwani -Chemelil- Awasi road and then join the Nairobi highway.
Traffic is however heavy along the Ahero Kisumu road as vehicles that got stuck in the gridlock make their way into Kisumu.
Kakola location Chief Jacob Ongudi however says they are now making efforts to evacuate families who have been marooned in flood waters in most parts of Nyando following the overflow.
Speaking to Ramogi FM, Ongudi asked those living along the river to move to higher grounds especially schools and the Ahero multi-purpose Hall.
Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has announced that over 600 people have so far been affected in their homes and businesses as Ahero town has been submerged.
He has said that plans to evacuate the affected persons are underway as teams from the county government and Kenya Red Cross have already swung into action.
Nyong'o has also appealed to well wishers who are willing to donate food and clothing items to visit Jaramogi Oginga Odinga sports complex in Kisumu.
