TotalEnergies, M-Gas partner to provide affordable, clean cooking solutions

TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya has partnered with M-Gas to expand its affordable Pay-as-You-Cook technology, aiming to impact over one million lives annually in Kenya.

Through this collaboration, M-Gas will provide its innovative pay-as-you-cook Smart Meters, installed on TotalEnergies’ LPG cylinders, while TotalEnergies will supply the cooking gas.

The M-Gas Smart Meter technology democratizes LPG access for consumers who cannot afford the upfront cost of gas. This system allows customers to cook meals with payments as low as Ksh.10 via mobile money, addressing the high-cost barrier of purchasing LPG upfront.

Additionally, the switch from traditional cooking methods like charcoal to LPG offers significant health benefits and reduces pollution.

"We are very happy to partner with M-Gas in actualizing TotalEnergies’ ambition of developing access to clean cooking in Kenya," said Mr. Fanchini.

"Through this shared vision with M-Gas, we aim to positively impact the environment, people's health, and reduce gender inequalities, particularly time poverty for women. This partnership aligns with the Kenyan government's vision of increasing LPG penetration and consumption per capita."

Currently, 400,000 households use the M-Gas solution, impacting over two million lives in Kenya.

Mr. Kimani commented, "The partnership with TotalEnergies enables M-Gas to scale our mission of providing affordable clean cooking solutions to households across Kenya. Leveraging our smart meter technology and last mile infrastructure alongside TotalEnergies' extensive supply infrastructure, this partnership will expand our reach to a previously underserved market, making clean cooking accessible to more families."

This partnership introduces a new clean cooking business model with potential to scale across the continent. This aligns with TotalEnergies’ ambition to provide 100 million people in Africa and India access to clean cooking by 2030, as announced at the Clean Cooking Summit organized by the International Energy Agency (IEA).
