Thousands of families displaced as Kenya Railways demolishes houses in Kibos, Kisumu County

Thousands of families in Kibos, Kisumu County were forced to spend the night in the cold after their houses were demolished on Friday night.

The demolition took place under the cover of darkness catching many residents by surprise and rendering them homeless.

Under the cover of darkness, Kenya Railways bulldozers moved in to demolish houses that were home to dozens of families and at the break of dawn thousands of families had been left homeless, most of them without alternatives.

The demolition took place under tight security, with police officers lobbing teargas canisters to forcefully evict families who had earlier on pleaded with the government to be spared as they have nowhere else to go.

Property of unknown value was destroyed during the demolition with families trying to salvage some of their belongings

Kenya Railways had issued a notice for families to vacate to pave way for the rehabilitation of the Nakuru Kisumu railway line

The affected families who had moved to court to stop the eviction have appealed to the national government to resettle them elsewhere.
