'They had collected Ksh.15,820 in less than 2 hours'

Three of the police officers arrested at Quarry bus station are based at Buruburu police station, while the fourth one is stationed at Embakasi police station.
They were caught while engaging in the alleged extortion.
According to a police report seen by Citizen.Digital, those arrested included: Abraham Kiptoo of Embakasi Police Station, Charo Katana of Buruburu Police Station, Sarah Karimi of Buruburu Police Station and Burton Mathenge of Buruburu Police Station
EACC detectives claim that the officers had gathered Ksh 15,830 in notes worth Ksh 50, Ksh 100, and Ksh 200 in less than 2 hours at the time of their arrests, which were carried out in response to numerous complaints from motorists and members of the public.
One of the complaints, according to detectives, claimed that the officers were openly accepting bribes from private and public vehicles, either directly or through agents sent out for that purpose.
"In some cases, drivers placed notes at certain parts of the vehicle, such as the driver's door handle, while others dropped notes for collection by the officers from the ground," a police report seen by Citizen.Digital explains.
"Others put the money in their driving licences which they handed to the traffic officers,"
The complex bribery scheme was allegedly to blame for the sporadic traffic jams on the busy road, according to some of the complaints.
They were taken to the Integrity Centre police station after their arrests and recorded statements before being released on Ksh. 10,000 cash bail each.
They are now awaiting the completion of the remaining aspects of the investigation, including obtaining the Director of Public Prosecutions' approval of the recommendation to arraign them before the Anti-Corruption Court.
