Teachers to get between Ksh.1K and Ksh.3K in new salary increment structure
Teachers
across the country are expected to benefit from a pay rise starting at the end
of this month.
The
teaching fraternity is set to get between Ksh.1,000 and Ksh.3,000 more on their
payslips based on their job groups.
The
teaching fraternity had expected a pay review starting the current financial
year from the 1st of July but was delayed on claims of lack of finances.
With a
split on whether to strike or not by the two top unions KNUT and KUPPET, the
government has repeatedly indicated that some Ksh.13 billion has been found to
finance the increment.
Based on
figures seen by Citizen TV, the least paid teacher at Grade B5 will now be paid
a basic salary of Ksh.23,830, up from Ksh.22,739.
A senior
teacher at the primary school level at grade C2 who currently earns Ksh.45,776
in basic pay will rise to Ksh.47,858.
A teacher
at a mid-grade of C5 including primary school head teachers will rise from a
maximum of Ksh.78,667 to a maximum of Ksh.79,651 in basic pay.
The
highest-paid teacher, a chief principal at Grade D5 currently gets Ksh.159,534
in basic pay. That is set to go up to Ksh.162,539.
This
means that the salary review is between Ksh.1,037 for the least paid and
Ksh.3,005 at the highest level.
The
teachers whose job grades are divided into 11 are entitled to various
allowances. Monthly commuter allowances are between Ksh.4,000 at the
entry-level and Ksh.16,000 at the highest level.
They are
entitled to leave allowances of between Ksh.4,000 and Ksh.10,000 depending on
the job group, payable once a year.
For
hardship, teachers are entitled to between Ksh.6,600 and Ksh.38,100 depending
on job group and location.
Teachers
are also entitled to housing allowance, clustered under three broad areas
categorized as per location.
In
cluster one, meaning teachers based in Nairobi, the housing allowance is
between Ksh.6,750 and Ksh.50,000 assigned based on job group.
For other
cities and major towns like Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret and Nyeri, the housing
allowance is between Ksh.4,500 and Ksh.35,000.
Other
areas categorized as former municipalities attract housing allowances of
between Ksh.3,850 and Ksh.25,000. The Ministry of Education has promised to
have the resources ready in the August salaries inclusive of arrears accrued in
July 2024.
